DAB Radio Buying Guide

With improved reception and a wider range of channels than analogue radios, DAB radios are becoming increasingly popular, with a variety of products available to buy online.

Here are some useful hints and tips for things to consider when choosing a DAB radio.

How to Choose a DAB Radio: Introduction

DAB radio was first broadcast in the UK in 1995, by the BBC, and there are now hundreds of national and local radio stations broadcasting in this format, including all of the BBC stations and many popular commercial stations. There is a large potential audience too, with 90 percent of the country able to receive digital radio.

Many radio stations only broadcast digitally, so if you would like to listen to one of these stations, a DAB radio is essential.

A main factor in the rise of DAB radio is that it is incredibly easy to use, and you don't need to twiddle with dials to get the best reception. If your DAB radio can pick up a station it will automatically be tuned in perfectly - like digital television, the signal is broadcast digitally, so even where there is a weak signal, reception will be crystal clear.

Another advantage of DAB over conventional radio is the Single Frequency Network technology, which allows many more stations to broadcast, so you?ll have more choice.

Choosing a DAB Radio: Types

DAB radio technology is versatile and allows manufacturers to produce a range of DAB radio products. Here are the main types of DAB radio available:

  • Standalone DAB Radio: Usually modelled on the classic portable radio design, a standalone DAB radio may include a useful carry strap and come with an LCD display, stereo speakers, headphone socket and even a USB port. DAB radios are often styled in a wood veneer and include FM radio.
  • DAB Micro System: This is a micro hi-fi system, but with a DAB radio instead of or alongside a conventional tuner.
  • DAB Personal Radio: DAB personal radios are usually pocket-sized and lightweight, making them an ideal choice if you're looking for a portable radio. They can come with headphones, LCD display and FM radio. Some DAB personal radios include an MP3 player.
  • DAB CD Radio: These follow the traditional CD player concept, but a DAB radio is included alongside or instead of a traditional radio.

Features to Look for When You Buy a DAB Radio

The features on DAB radios can vary widely. It's worth looking at the features available to help you decide which DAB radio is best for you.

Here are some of the features and functions that are commonly found on DAB radios:

  • Text: This gives a variety of information relating to the digital radio station you are listening to, including song titles, web site addresses and news headlines.
  • Analogue tuner: This enables the DAB radio player to be used as a traditional radio, for receiving FM and MW stations.
  • Clock: Often includes automatic time settings, and integrated with an alarm function.
  • Headphone socket: For personal listening.
  • USB port: Allows you to connect your DAB radio to other devices.
  • Station presets: Store all your favourite radio stations for easy access.
  • Pause and rewind: In case you miss part of a broadcast, DAB radios can include a pause and rewind function.

Before You Buy a DAB Radio - Check Coverage

At the moment, around 90 percent of the UK is covered by DAB digital radio, so it is likely that you will be able to use your DAB radio, but it's worth checking to see if your area is covered.

Information about digital radio coverage is available from the online stores that sell DAB radios.

Do I Need to Buy an Extended DAB Radio Warranty?

Before choosing your new DAB radio, find out about the type of warranty that is offered by the manufacturer or online retailer. It will cover repairs and replacements under certain conditions. Many warranties come free with the DAB radio and they may differ according to the brand.

It's worth setting a budget for how much you are prepared to spend on a DAB radio. By shopping around online, comparing prices between different DAB radio retailers, and taking advantage of special offers and discounts, you may be able to buy a better model of DAB radio for your money.
