Midi System Buying Guide

Here are some useful hints and tips to consider when choosing a midi system.

How to Choose a Midi System: Introduction

A midi system is a compact hi-fi unit with detached speakers - a space saving and affordable way to enjoy a range of audio entertainment at home. Versatile and easy to use, midi systems have become increasingly popular since the 1980s as convenient and functional music centres - combining a variety of audio devices, including radio, compact disc, cassette tape and record player in one handy unit.

Unlike a standard hi-fi system where the different components are stacked, a midi system houses all the various audio devices in one easy to move unit. The radio, amplifier and CD player don't need connecting together, although some models will have a separate record player.

Today's models of midi system incorporate many more features, and there is a range of models with different styles and features, and at different prices to choose from, so there should be a midi system on the market to suit your taste, budget and listening needs.

Features to Look for When You Buy a Midi System

To make sure you choose a midi system that is right for you, it's important to understand the different features available and decide on the combination of functions that will suit your needs.

Key features that can be found on a midi system include:

  • Tuner - A radio tuner allows you to listen to a range of radio stations from around the world, and is an essential feature for most people looking to buy a midi system. Most models will have at least an FM tuner, although many models include MW and LW as well. RDS (Radio Data System) shows the name of the radio station on a screen, and saves time when searching for the radio station you are looking for.
  • DAB radio - Unlike a conventional radio tuner, DAB radio receives digital radio broadcasts, so you'll benefit from less interference, and most models have easy to use 'straight to radio station' buttons. There are also a growing number of digital radio stations available, from specialist music to sports channels, so this is a must for anyone who loves to listen to the radio.
  • Cassette player - Although cassette tapes have seen a decline in use over recent years, many people want a cassette player with their midi system as a convenient method for playing and recording onto tapes. If you are likely to want to record from one cassette onto another, look out for a midi system that comes with a tape to tape system - usually with high speed dubbing.
  • CD player - Most midi systems will feature a compact disc player, but for versatility, look out for systems that can play a range of CD formats, including CD-R, CD-RW and MPG CD.
  • Turntable - The turntable has enjoyed a resurgence of interest in recent years, and many models of midi system will come with an auxiliary socket so you can plug a record player into the unit if the midi system doesn't include one already. Look out for turntables that can play at 33 rpm for LPs and 45 rpm for those old vinyl singles.
  • USB - With a USB connection, a midi system can be used to play a range of portable audio devices, such as an iPod.
  • Power - Measured in watts, this defines the depth and volume of the sound. Most households will need a midi system with at least 10 watts of power.
  • Remote control - Whether it's changing radio stations, or skipping through the tracks on a CD, a remote control will save you numerous trips to and from the sofa!
  • Graphic equalizer - Either preset or programmable, the graphic equalizer enhances the sound whether it's for pop music, spoken word or classical music.
  • Headphone socket - This is ideal for times when you want to listen to your midi system in privacy or listen to music without disturbing anyone else.

Do I Need to Buy an Extended Midi System Warranty?

Most midi systems will come with a warranty that offers a guarantee for repairs or a replacement for around two years from the date of purchase under certain terms and conditions. You can also choose to pay a little more for an extended warranty to give you extra peace of mind.

It's a good idea to set a budget before shopping for a new midi system, and to avoid paying more for features that you won't need. By comparing prices between different online retailers and taking advantage of special offers and discounts, you could even get a better model of midi system for your money.
